Tensions between Guyana and Venezuela have escalated after Guyana reported the presence of a Venezuelan military vessel in a disputed area on Saturday. The incident has been deemed "unacceptable" by the United States.
Guyana's President Irfaan Ali stated that a Venezuelan Navy patrol vessel entered Guyanese waters and approached assets within Guyana's exclusive zone. He added that international partners have been alerted. Venezuela claims the waters are subject to demarcation under international law.
Venezuela has requested an immediate meeting under the Argyle Mechanism, an agreement established in December 2023 to prevent the use of force between the two nations. The U.S. government warned of consequences for Venezuela if further provocations occur.
