Mexican Senate Approves Anti-Nepotism Reform, Implementation Delayed Until 2030

On February 25, 2025, the Mexican Senate approved a constitutional reform aimed at prohibiting consecutive re-election and nepotism in public office. Initiated by President Claudia Sheinbaum, the reform's implementation has been delayed until 2030, a decision that has drawn criticism from the opposition. The reform, approved with 127 votes in favor, seeks to prevent direct relatives from succeeding officials in elected positions and to eliminate immediate re-election possibilities. The delay in implementation, however, passed with 97 votes in favor and 26 against. The reform will now be sent to the Chamber of Deputies for analysis and potential approval.
