Sofia Protests: Clashes Erupt Over Euro Adoption Plans

Edited by: Alla illuny

Clashes occurred in Sofia, Bulgaria, on Saturday between police and nationalist protesters opposing the government's plan to adopt the euro.

The demonstration, initiated in front of the central bank, saw protesters burning effigies and throwing projectiles at the European Commission's local office, resulting in property damage and minor injuries to police officers.

The protesters, largely supporters of the ultra-nationalist Revival party, demand a referendum on euro adoption, expressing concerns over potential price increases and questioning the government's economic data.

While the government aims for euro adoption by January 1, 2026, it faces opposition and must meet inflation targets. Bulgaria joined the EU in 2007 and has experienced political instability, with frequent changes in government.
