Congolese Troops Arrive in Gatumba Amidst Rising Regional Tensions

Approximately 500 Congolese soldiers and police officers arrived in Gatumba, a border town, on Wednesday.

Bintou Keita, head of the UN's DRC peacekeeping mission (MONUSCO), conveyed concerns to the UN Security Council regarding the M23's advancement toward the junction of the DRC, Rwanda, and Burundi borders.

Huang Xia, the UN Secretary-General's special envoy for the Great Lakes region, informed the Security Council on Wednesday that M23 and its allies are progressing toward other strategic areas in North and South Kivu, raising the risk of regional conflict.
