Baltic States Achieve Energy Independence from Russia, German Air Base Targeted by Suspected Russian Drones

The Baltic states of Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia successfully disconnected from Russia's electricity grid on Saturday, marking a significant step towards energy independence from Moscow. The three countries then operated autonomously for a day before connecting to the European grid via Poland on Sunday. This move has been a long-sought goal for the Baltic states, seeking to reduce their reliance on Russian energy resources.

Meanwhile, in Germany, a major air base near Husum on the North Sea, where Ukrainian soldiers are being trained, was the target of a suspected Russian drone espionage operation. The German Armed Forces (Bundeswehr) reported six security incidents involving professional drones of unknown origin between January 9 and 29. The drones were equipped with advanced features and were able to hover in the air for extended periods, making them difficult to detect and neutralize. The Bundeswehr suspects the drones may have been launched from ships in the North or Baltic Seas. While there is no concrete evidence, suspicion falls on Russia due to the nature of the incident and the location of the base, which is a training center for the use of anti-aircraft missiles and the Patriot air defense system. The German Ministry of Defense has launched an investigation into the suspected espionage attempt.
