Trump Announces Executive Order for Migrant Facility at Guantanamo Bay

Edited by: Татьяна Гуринович

On January 30, 2025, US President Donald Trump announced plans to sign an executive order to establish a facility at Guantanamo Bay to accommodate thousands of migrants. During a ceremony, Trump stated he would instruct the Departments of Defense and Homeland Security to initiate preparations for this facility.

Guantanamo Bay military prison, located on a US Naval base in southeastern Cuba, was established in January 2002 following the September 11 attacks to detain individuals classified as 'enemy combatants.' The facility has faced efforts for closure from Democratic presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden, but these attempts have been met with resistance from Congress.
