On January 29, 2025, Syria's state news agency reported that Ahmed al-Sharaa has been appointed as the president for a transitional period. This decision follows the recent removal of President Bashar al-Assad.
Al-Sharaa, who leads Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), has been authorized to establish a temporary legislative council. This council will operate until a new constitution is adopted, as stated by commander Hassan Abdel Ghani.
HTS, once an opposition armed group, has emerged as the de facto ruling authority in Syria, particularly in the rebel-held Idlib province, where it has formed an interim government comprising officials from its previous local administration.
