Ghana's former President John Dramani Mahama has won the presidential election held on December 7, 2024, after his main opponent, Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, conceded defeat. In a press conference, Bawumia acknowledged the results, stating, 'The people of Ghana have spoken, the people have voted for change at this time and we respect it with all humility.'
This election marks the end of two terms for the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), led by President Nana Akufo-Addo, during which the country faced significant economic challenges, including high inflation and a debt default. Bawumia confirmed he had called Mahama to congratulate him on his 'decisive' victory.
Mahama, who previously served as president from July 2012 to January 2017, also noted on social media that he had received the congratulatory call from Bawumia. Celebrations erupted among Mahama's supporters outside the National Democratic Congress (NDC) campaign headquarters in Accra.
During his campaign, Mahama pledged to 'reset' the country, focusing on various issues that resonate with the younger population. The election was heavily influenced by Ghana's economic difficulties, which included a recent $3 billion bailout from the International Monetary Fund.
