A large-scale protest movement of high school students is unfolding in France, which has already led to the closure of around 400 educational institutions across the country. Students say that the school day is excessively long, and the conditions in which the educational process takes place are unsatisfactory.
The students' main grievances According to the schoolchildren, the key problems of the modern French school have become:
- The excessive length of the school day, which leads to chronic exhaustion among students.
- Unsatisfactory sanitary conditions, in particular, the lack of proper temperature regulation in school buildings, which makes the classrooms too hot.
- The systematic absence of teachers. Students note that absent teachers are increasingly likely not to be replaced. This is due both to a policy of budget cuts and to a banal shortage of personnel: fewer and fewer specialists are entering the French education system.
Escalation of the protests The protest action began last week in the Paris suburbs, but then quickly spread across the whole of France. On Friday, bonfires again burned in front of many schools, and clashes between high school students and police broke out.
The authorities' reaction The French government acknowledges that the teenagers' complaints are generally well-founded and reflect real systemic problems in the field of education. However, the authorities resolutely condemn the clashes, the vandalism and the arson, calling what is happening "street battles" and "guerrilla warfare," and urging that the dialogue be moved into a constructive channel.
The European vector of development The situation in France echoes global trends. The issue of the teacher shortage and the need to modernize the school environment is being actively discussed in many EU countries. The problem of climate comfort in classrooms is also becoming a priority against the backdrop of increasingly frequent heatwaves, which is prompting European states to revise the standards for the construction and equipping of educational institutions.
Despite the current tension, what is happening can be seen as an important and necessary stage of renewal. The voice of the younger generation is forcing society and the authorities to reconsider outdated approaches, opening the path to creating a more comfortable, fair and effective educational environment for the future.
