Trump asked Kimberly Guilfoyle to resign as US ambassador to Greece

The administration of Donald Trump asked Kimberly Guilfoyle to resign from her post as US ambassador to Greece. This was announced on 13 October by the new White House press secretary, Katie Zacharia, at her first press conference.

Zacharia confirmed that Guilfoyle had been "asked to resign," noting that she had been a "great asset to the team" and wishing her success. Guilfoyle herself, in a statement on the social network X, called the job of ambassador "the honor of a lifetime" and assured that she would remain a loyal supporter of Trump and his policies.

The decision followed a series of publications by the Wall Street Journal. They alleged that Guilfoyle had asked Trump donor Eric Deters to pay off a credit card bill of 100 thousand dollars in exchange for access to the administration. There were also reports of her statements about connections with Greek businessmen who had allegedly paid for luxury trips for her, and of comments about the possibility of changing governments.

Guilfoyle categorically rejected all the accusations. "These claims are false, and I intend to vigorously defend my name, reputation and integrity," she wrote. Trump, for his part, told journalists that she had "done a good job," but that "we didn't like what we read." The president added that he had not personally spoken with her before the decision.

Guilfoyle, a former Fox News host and previously engaged to Donald Trump Jr., was appointed ambassador to Greece in 2025. In Athens, her activities had already raised questions among the opposition: there were reports of her meetings with lobbyists and her promotion of American LNG.

How will this episode affect Washington's relations with Athens and the domestic political situation in Greece?

Zacharia emphasized that the decision was made amid growing public attention to the scandalous publications. Guilfoyle promised to continue supporting the "America First" movement regardless of the outcome of the situation.
