Sometimes, only a single trash bin stands between a person and a million euros.
A resident of Bitonto, Italy, checked her MillionDay ticket at a terminal and saw a message she interpreted as 'no win.' Without a second thought, she tossed the ticket into the trash.
It was later revealed, however, that she had won €1 million.
There was just one problem: the trash had already been taken away.
Waste management workers had to track down the correct truck and organize what was arguably the city's most expensive trash search in history. Employees sifted through approximately six tons of waste until they finally found the coveted ticket, which, by some miracle, remained intact.
The story ended well: the ticket was returned to its owner, and the million euros were literally rescued from a pile of garbage.
And perhaps, the moral of the story is quite simple:
if the terminal says something strange, don't throw away your ticket. Especially if it potentially holds a million.
