On June 21, 2025, a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket launched the BIFROST surveillance satellite into orbit from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. This mission marks a significant milestone, as BIFROST is the first satellite specifically designed to monitor Greenland and the Arctic regions.
Developed by Space Inventor, Terma, GateHouse SatCom, DTU, and Unibap Space Solutions, BIFROST is a collaborative effort funded by the Danish Defence Acquisition and Logistics Organisation (DALO) and the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV). The satellite enhances situational awareness and tactical observations for the Danish and Swedish Defence forces.
The microsatellite weighs approximately 50 kilograms and has a five-meter wingspan, equipped with sensors to capture optical and multispectral data. A constellation of 20 such satellites would enable 24-hour monitoring of Arctic maritime activity. The launch can be rewatched online.
This launch aligns with Denmark's Space Strategy for Research and Innovation 2025-2035, introduced in 2024. The strategy prioritizes the Arctic for security, where space-based technologies support military and emergency services. These services include monitoring navigation, search and rescue, and enforcing sovereignty.
The BIFROST mission showcases Danish innovation, integrating AI, advanced sensors, inter-satellite communication, and modern satellite design. It will significantly enhance Denmark and Sweden's ability to respond quickly and share data across international partnerships. The launch occurred on June 21 at 21:19 UTC.
