Daylight Fireball Streaks Across Southeastern U.S., Sparking Investigation

Edited by: Tetiana Martynovska 17

A bright fireball captivated residents across the southeastern United States on Thursday, June 26, 2025. The National Weather Service (NWS) identified the phenomenon as a meteor or space debris entering Earth's atmosphere. Witnesses reported the event around 12:25 p.m. EDT, with reports from Georgia, South Carolina, and Tennessee.

In Henry County, Georgia, a resident reported a rock crashing through their roof. The NWS noted that the sonic boom from the meteor likely caused tremors felt in the area. The Geostationary Lightning Mapper (GLM) on NOAA's GOES satellites detected the meteor as it passed through the atmosphere.

Social media platforms were flooded with videos and reports from the region. The American Meteor Society received over 140 reports from multiple states. The NWS and other agencies are currently investigating the event to determine the object's nature and trajectory.
