Astronomers Discover Largest Organic Molecule in Interstellar Space

Edited by: Tetiana Martynovska 17

In a groundbreaking discovery, astronomers have identified cyanocoronene, the largest polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) ever detected in interstellar space. This complex molecule, composed of seven interconnected benzene rings and a cyano group, was found in the cold molecular cloud TMC-1, located approximately 430 light-years from Earth.

The discovery challenges previous assumptions about the size limitations of PAHs in space. Scientists previously believed that larger molecules would be too rare or unstable to exist in the harsh conditions of interstellar space. The identification process involved synthesizing cyanocoronene in a laboratory and using advanced spectroscopic techniques to measure its unique microwave spectrum.

Researchers then utilized the Green Bank Telescope (GBT) to search for the molecule in data from the GOTHAM project. The GBT's sensitive receivers detected distinct spectral lines matching those of cyanocoronene, confirming its presence with a high statistical significance. This finding suggests that complex organic molecules may be more common in the cosmos than previously thought.

The discovery of cyanocoronene has significant implications for our understanding of the origins of complex organic chemistry in the universe. PAHs are thought to play a key role in the chemistry that leads to the formation of stars and planets. The presence of such large PAHs in TMC-1 suggests that the building blocks of life may be present even before stars are born.

This research, presented at the American Astronomical Society meeting and published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters, highlights the vital role of the GBT in the search for complex organic molecules. It provides valuable insights into the chemical processes that may lead to the formation of stars, planets, and potentially life itself.
