Asteroid 2024 YR4: Lunar Impact Risk Revised, Offering Planetary Defense Insights

Edited by: Tetiana Martynovska 17

Asteroid 2024 YR4, initially assessed for Earth impact risk, now presents a slightly increased probability of lunar impact in 2032. Recent data, including observations by the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), refined its trajectory, raising the lunar impact probability from 3.8% to 4.3%. The asteroid, estimated at 30 meters in diameter, poses no significant threat to the Moon's orbit. Detected in late 2023, initial calculations suggested a potential Earth impact, but further analysis has eliminated this risk. The asteroid's origin is believed to be the main asteroid belt. Further observations are planned for 2028 to refine the orbit and study the asteroid's composition. This event serves as a practical exercise for planetary defense, including detection and public communication. The European Space Agency (ESA) is also actively monitoring the asteroid. The situation underscores the value of continuous monitoring, data analysis, and international collaboration in assessing and mitigating potential space hazards. The study of 2024 YR4 provides valuable insights for planetary defense.
