NASA's Electrodynamic Dust Shield (EDS) has demonstrated its capability to remove lunar dust, or regolith, from surfaces during Firefly Aerospace's Blue Ghost Mission 1, which ended on March 16. Lunar dust is abrasive and clings to surfaces, posing a threat to equipment and astronauts. The EDS uses electrical forces to lift and remove this dust. A demonstration showed the technology's effectiveness in removing dust from glass and thermal radiator surfaces. This milestone advances long-term lunar and interplanetary operations by reducing dust-related hazards. Applications range from thermal radiators and solar panels to spacesuits and helmet visors. Developed at Kennedy Space Center with funding from NASA's Space Technology Mission Directorate, the EDS technology supports NASA's Artemis campaign and future dust mitigation solutions.
