NASA commemorates the 110th anniversary of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), the precursor to NASA, with a new video collection. Founded on March 3, 1915, NACA aimed to advance U.S. flight technology. It evolved from a small committee into a major organization during World War II, housing top aeronautical engineers and facilities. In 1958, it transformed into NASA, marking the dawn of the Space Age. The video collection showcases NACA's historical photography and highlights its formation, expansion, and research across its centers, now NASA's Langley, Ames, Glenn, and Armstrong Research Centers.
In other news, NASA has appointed Norman Knight as acting deputy director of Johnson Space Center. Knight, current Director of the Flight Operations Directorate (FOD), will maintain both roles. He is responsible for astronaut training and mission operations for NASA human spaceflight programs, including aircraft operations. Knight began as a Space Shuttle flight controller and progressed through various leadership roles, including flight director and chief of the Flight Director Office. Steven Koerner, Johnson acting director, cited Knight's expertise and dedication as key to the center's continued success.
