DC Geothermal Project for Affordable Housing

Edited by: an_lymons vilart

June 19, Washington, D.C. Brightcore Energy is installing a $5.5 million geothermal heating and cooling system at the Barry Farm Redevelopment project.

The project includes 50 boreholes, each 400 feet deep, to harness the earth's temperature. This system aims to provide affordable and sustainable heating and cooling for 900 residential apartments and retail spaces.

The geothermal system is up to six times more efficient than traditional gas furnaces. The project received a $2.5 million grant from the D.C. Public Service Commission and $3 million in financing from the D.C. Green Bank.

The initiative is a collaboration between Brightcore Energy, Preservation of Affordable Housing (POAH), and the D.C. Housing Authority. It sets a standard for energy goals and resilient communities.
