CAERI Advances Global Collaboration in Automotive Safety and Sustainability

Edited by: an_lymons vilart

The China Automotive Engineering Research Institute (CAERI) is enhancing its global presence by establishing an International Expert Group within its Automotive Index Technical Expert Committee. This initiative aims to foster international collaboration in automotive assessment technologies, incorporating diverse perspectives from university professors and experts from leading carmakers. The CAERI Automotive Index has developed three core assessment systems focusing on vehicle safety, intelligence, and health, with over 50 domestic and international automotive companies adopting the index as a development standard. Notably, the index was recently incorporated into global automotive safety standards by Germany's CARHS, strengthening China's influence in the global automotive industry and accelerating the internationalization of Chinese automakers.

In July 2025, CAERI signed a cooperation agreement with the Green New Car Assessment Program (Green NCAP) to align laboratory testing capabilities in the green low-carbon sector. This collaboration integrates resources from international authoritative evaluation institutions, professional technical service providers, and leading automaker BYD, facilitating Chinese vehicles' compliance with advanced global standards. The partnership aims to achieve international mutual recognition of test results through the systematic alignment of green testing technologies in energy consumption, charging, and emissions.

Additionally, CAERI signed a memorandum with the IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Society (IEEE ITSS) to jointly explore evaluation paradigms for intelligent connected vehicles. This partnership seeks to accelerate the integration of Chinese standards with international systems, enhancing China's influence in global rulemaking. The collaboration focuses on vehicle-to-everything communication, autonomous driving decision evaluation, and performance testing in complex traffic environments, contributing to the advancement of intelligent and green transformation in the automotive industry.

Since initiating systematic research in 2014, CAERI has evaluated numerous vehicle models, leading to the development of over 400 standards and patents. The institute's data reflects industry progress, with a significant increase in models achieving full scores in occupant protection. In the intelligent assessment sector, Chinese brands demonstrate strong competitiveness, with a high percentage of models equipped with navigation-assisted functions and memory parking features, surpassing international auto brands. CAERI's latest evaluation systems cover health, connected intelligence, privacy security, and specialized new energy vehicle assessments, underscoring its commitment to enhancing vehicle safety and promoting sustainable development in the automotive industry.
