Us Doe Identifies Sites for Ai Data Centers, Prioritizes Nuclear and SMRs

Edited by: an_lymons vilart

May 13, USA: The Department of Energy (DOE) has selected 16 sites on its lands for rapid construction of data centers and energy generation, driven by increasing AI demand.

These sites feature existing energy infrastructure and expedited permitting for new energy generation, including nuclear. The DOE aims for these data centers to be operational by the end of 2027. Small nuclear reactors (SMRs), enhanced geothermal systems, fuel cells, energy storage, and carbon capture are considered for installation.

The DOE is considering various power generation types and sizes, as well as potential public-private partnerships. Nuclear sites, such as Idaho National Laboratory and Pacific Northwest laboratory, are strong contenders due to existing infrastructure and supportive communities. Solar and storage are also being considered for faster deployment.
