Completed in 2016, Block Island Wind Farm is America's first energy island, located off the coast of Rhode Island. The wind farm features 5 offshore GE Haliade 150-6MW turbines, generating approximately 18,400 MWh of clean wind energy annually. This powers every home on Block Island and an additional 12,500 homes on the mainland. The project replaced four noisy diesel generators, significantly reducing noise pollution by 14 decibels. A survey of local fishers indicated a 44% increase in fish species near the turbines. Additionally, 36% reported mussel colonies establishing themselves on the turbine structures. The wind farm has also boosted the local economy, creating 300 temporary jobs during construction. Block Island has seen a 19% increase in occupancy on short-term rental platforms. Monthly rent revenue has risen by approximately $3,490 during peak tourism times.
