Georgia to boost energy security via renewables

Edited by: Tetiana Pinchuk Pinchuk

IRENA's report highlights Georgia's potential to enhance energy security through renewable energy development. Georgia has significant untapped renewable resources, including 15 GW of hydropower (less than 25% developed), 4 GW of wind, and 4.5 GW of solar PV. The country currently relies on imports for over 75% of its energy needs. IRENA's assessment provides a pathway to meet 2030 climate and energy targets, reduce the energy trade deficit, and boost socio-economic benefits. Key recommendations include strengthening governance, enhancing grid flexibility, expanding financing, and involving local communities. The report also advocates for building local value chains, advancing technical training, and establishing a just transition framework.
