On November 20, 2024, in Canada, EVLO Energy Storage, a subsidiary of Hydro-Québec, announced a significant development in its collaboration with Dominion Energy. The company will create a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) that meets enhanced fire and safety specifications, achieving UL 9540 certification.
The UL 9540 certification confirms the safety, reliability, and performance of BESS across various phases, including design, production, testing, installation, and operation. Key requirements include robust safety governance, fire prevention measures, explosion containment, and sensitivity in hazard detection.
EVLOFLEX, the utility-grade BESS solution, incorporates both active and passive thermal runaway mitigation measures. Notably, it exceeds NFPA 69 design standards by ensuring gas evacuation during power outages. This system was initially certified in March 2024 and has now been recertified to validate safety upgrades requested by Dominion.
The enhanced EVLOFLEX will be deployed in three large-scale projects in Virginia, with a combined capacity exceeding 300 MWh. These projects support Dominion's Grid-Transformation Plan and align with the Virginia Clean Economy Act, aiming for 100% clean energy by 2050. Commissioning is set for 2025 and 2026.
EVLO's commitment to innovation and safety is evident in its collaboration with Dominion Energy, as it seeks to meet stringent safety standards for future projects.
