November 20, 2024, United Kingdom: Cemex Ventures has initiated industrial-scale hydrogen production in collaboration with HiiROC at its Rugby cement plant.
This project represents a significant step in Cemex's carbon reduction strategy, aiming to decrease reliance on fossil fuels and lower CO2 emissions in the construction sector.
HiiROC employs a patented thermal plasma electrolysis process, utilizing only 20% of the electricity required for traditional water electrolysis while capturing carbon as a solid byproduct.
The modular system can be deployed from single units to large industrial plants, allowing flexibility in implementation.
The hydrogen produced will serve as an alternative energy source for clinker production, supporting Cemex's decarbonization goals.
Cemex Ventures Director Gonzalo Galindo emphasized the company's commitment to transforming the industry through innovative partnerships.
Tim Davies, co-founder and CEO of HiiROC, noted that this deployment signifies a major advancement in affordable, clean, and scalable hydrogen production technologies, crucial for decarbonizing challenging industries.
This partnership, which began in 2021 with an initial investment, has expanded in 2023 to enhance hydrogen capacity at the Rugby facility.
