Elon Musk's Starlink has launched its high-speed, low-latency satellite internet services in Sri Lanka. This marks a significant step in the country's digital connectivity.
The announcement was made on July 2, 2025, via X (formerly Twitter). Musk confirmed Starlink's availability in Sri Lanka.
The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) granted a license to Starlink Lanka (Private) Limited on August 14, 2024. This allowed the company to offer satellite-based internet services across the island.
This followed the approval of a new telecommunications bill in July 2024. The bill amended existing laws, facilitating Starlink's entry into the market.
Starlink is expected to provide faster and more reliable connectivity than existing services. This is especially beneficial for remote and underserved areas.
The service offers download speeds between 50-200 Mbps. This is comparable to or faster than many traditional broadband providers.
The introduction of Starlink supports Sri Lanka's digital transformation efforts. It aims to enhance internet accessibility and bridge the digital divide.
The government aims to attract international companies to improve internet services. This is particularly important in rural areas to support the IT sector's growth.
As of July 2, 2025, Starlink's services are available nationwide. This provides Sri Lankans with access to high-speed internet connectivity.
