Copilot+ pcs get smarter with semantic search

Edited by: Veronika Nazarova

Copilot+ PCs are enhancing their capabilities with an updated Windows Search featuring semantic indexing. This feature aims to make Windows Search, File Explorer, and the Settings app smarter by using a small language AI model that runs locally on the device's Neural Processing Unit (NPU). The semantic search feature doesn't require an internet connection, ensuring data privacy as all gathered data is stored locally and not sent to Microsoft. To get semantic search, users need to update their Copilot+ PC via Settings > Windows Update. Once updated, the Windows Search bar will display a magnifying glass icon with small star badges. The new search feature applies to files in formats like DOCX, PDF, PPTX, TXT, XLSX, BMP, GIF, ICO, JPEG, JPG, and PNG, improving file and image searches. While not perfect, semantic search shows potential and is expected to improve with further indexing and user feedback.
