Skype, a pioneer in online audio and video calling, will be retired in May 2025. Microsoft announced the end of the platform, which rose to prominence in the early 2000s. The decision comes as Microsoft consolidates its communication services.

Microsoft aims to streamline its offerings by focusing on Microsoft Teams. The company encourages Skype users to migrate their data to Teams. A migration window from February to May 2025 will ensure a smooth transition.

New users can no longer purchase Skype Credit or calling plans. Existing subscribers can use their subscriptions until their billing cycle ends. Remaining Skype Credit will be accessible even after the shutdown.

Users can migrate to Teams using their existing Skype ID. All contacts, messages, and conversations will be automatically transferred. Teams offers similar features with enhanced functionality like calendar integration.

Microsoft is working to make Teams a user-friendly platform for audio and video calls. With the shift, Microsoft Teams is positioned as the successor to Skype. The company aims to provide a seamless transition for all users.
