Samsung has updated its SmartThings app, enhancing its IoT platform with new home automation features. The update aims to boost cross-selling of Samsung's smart devices and appliances. It includes improved integration with Samsung Health, an intercom feature, and expanded device compatibility via Matter 1.4. The app's "Routines" function now allows users to set up recurring weekly, monthly, or yearly automations. For example, users can schedule lights to turn off at bedtime or TVs to start on a specific channel in the morning. SmartThings now supports devices like water heaters, heat pumps, solar energy devices, and batteries. The app can also send voice messages to SmartThings-connected speakers. This feature arrives later than similar offerings from Amazon's Echo devices (since 2017) and Apple's HomePods (since 2020). The update provides a more comprehensive smart home experience.
