Western Europe is leading the way in the global deployment of 5G Standalone (SA) networks. While initial 5G rollouts relied on 4G core networks (Non-Standalone), the focus is now on full 5G SA, which promises enhanced performance and new capabilities like network slicing.
The UK is demonstrating strong momentum in this transition, with three operators having launched 5G SA services, matching Germany and surpassing France. BT (EE) launched its 5G SA network across 15 major UK cities in September 2024. Virgin Media O2 has also launched 5G SA for business customers in 500 towns and cities. Vodafone launched its 5G Ultra offering in select cities in June 2023.
Despite fluctuations in new 5G SA launches globally, Western Europe continues to hold a dominant position, accounting for a significant portion of operational 5G SA networks worldwide. This signifies a substantial upgrade in mobile internet capabilities for the region.
