Meta AI, the generative AI assistant from Meta, has begun its rollout in the European Union across Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp. This launch comes over a year after its initial release in the United States. The company cited navigating complex European regulations as the reason for the delayed launch.
The European version of Meta AI focuses on text generation and lacks the image generation capabilities available in the US. It is available in six languages and has not been trained on European user data. Meta plans to deploy the assistant in 41 European countries and 21 overseas territories in the coming weeks.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg aims for Meta AI to surpass one billion users this year. The company currently reports 700 million monthly active users. Meta AI is also expected to become a standalone app in the US, directly competing with AI services like ChatGPT and Google's Gemini.
