iOS 18.5 Update: iPhone 13 Gains Carrier-Based Satellite Texting, T-Mobile Starlink Trial Available Until July 2025

Apple's iOS 18.5 update, released on May 12, 2025, brings carrier-based satellite texting capabilities to iPhone 13 models, including the iPhone 13, 13 Mini, 13 Pro, and 13 Pro Max. This feature relies on partnerships between mobile carriers and satellite providers to offer connectivity in areas without cell towers.

How it Works

Unlike Apple's Emergency SOS via Satellite, this new feature functions more like traditional cellular networks. Carriers collaborate with satellite companies to provide coverage in dead zones. T-Mobile, for example, has partnered with SpaceX's Starlink to offer satellite texting, currently in beta and free until July 2025. Any iPhone user, including those on other carriers, can sign up to test the service.

To use the new direct-to-satellite texting system, you need a relatively new phone with all the latest updates. You also need to sign up for the program through T-Mobile.

Other Features in iOS 18.5

Besides satellite texting, iOS 18.5 includes a new Pride Harmony wallpaper, parental notifications for Screen Time passcode use, and fixes for issues in the Apple Vision Pro app. The update also features security enhancements and bug fixes.
