Epirus has launched Leonidas H2O, a high-power microwave (HPM) system designed to disable boat motors and counter unmanned surface vessels (USV) and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV). The system utilizes the scalable Leonidas energy-based HPM technology platform. During the U.S. Navy's Advanced Technology Exercise Coastal Trident in August 2024, Leonidas H2O demonstrated its effectiveness by disabling four commercially available vessel motors (40-90 horsepower) at various ranges. The system's design accounts for marine environments and potential salt water corrosion. According to Epirus CEO Andy Lowery, Leonidas H2O fills a critical capability gap, offering a demonstrated solution where the Pentagon has invested significantly without deploying an operational system to date. Epirus is working towards deploying the system with the Army and Navy, with potential applications in port security and defense against unmanned surface vessels and missiles. The technology could prove useful in coastal areas where kinetic defenses are not ideal. The system can also use water reflection to extend its range. The company is also working to get the capability into the hands of service members.
