Korean battery manufacturers are showcasing advanced cylindrical batteries at InterBattery 2025 in Seoul, aiming to compete with Chinese firms.
LG Energy Solution presented its 46-series cylindrical batteries, destined for Tesla, Mercedes-Benz, and Rivian, boasting five times greater energy capacity and six times more density than previous versions, enabling a 16% longer driving range.
LG is also supplying 2170 cylindrical-type batteries to Aptera Motors for their solar-powered EV, which can run for 643 kilometers on a single charge with an additional 40 miles per day from solar charging.
Samsung SDI displayed cylindrical batteries in Hyundai Motor's DAL-e robot and is co-developing batteries for robots with Hyundai. They also showcased four types of 46-series cylindrical batteries, with mass production soon to commence.
SK On presented mock-ups of its cylindrical batteries, with a pilot factory already built and mass production being expedited. They are in discussions with global carmakers for orders.
This push comes as Korean firms like LG Energy Solution, Samsung SDI, and SK On face increasing competition from Chinese companies like BYD and CATL in the global battery market.
