Volkswagen to Introduce New EV Platform and LFP Batteries Starting 2026

Edited by: Tetiana Pinchuk Pinchuk

Volkswagen plans significant changes to its electric vehicle lineup starting in 2026. The German manufacturer will introduce a new platform and transition to lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries. The first model to receive this update is expected to be the Volkswagen ID.2 in 2026. This model will also be the first Volkswagen to use LFP batteries, which are generally cheaper to produce than NMC batteries. Volkswagen will transition other ID models to the updated MEB Plus platform after the ID.2 launch. This new platform is an evolution of the current MEB platform. Volkswagen will also adopt LFP battery technology for these models.
