Italy is expanding its EV charging infrastructure, achieving a 27% increase in public charging points in 2024, surpassing 64,000 units. This growth positions Italy as a leader in Europe for charging infrastructure relative to the number of electric vehicles. Key highlights include:
47% of new installations are DC fast chargers (over 50 kW).
Ultra-fast chargers (over 150 kW) now account for 6% of the total, doubling since 2022.
Over 3,447 charging points are available within 3 km of highway exits, with over 1,000 located directly on highways.
Electric vehicle charging is now available at 41% of highway service stations.
57% of charging points are located in northern regions, 20% in central regions, and 23% in the south and islands.
Despite these advancements, challenges remain, including bureaucratic delays causing 16% of installed points to be inactive and regional disparities in charger distribution. Italy has already achieved 75-80% of the EU's AFIR targets for charging density by the end of 2025.
