Russia's Electric Vehicle Sales Surge in 2024, Driven by Zeekr

In 2024, Russia achieved a record in electric vehicle sales, with 17,805 new electric cars on the roads, marking a 26.4% increase from the previous year. However, growth has slowed compared to the previous year's remarkable 4.7-fold increase.

The Chinese brand Zeekr emerged as the top choice among Russian consumers, selling 7,623 units, which accounts for 43% of total sales. The Zeekr 001 electric crossover was the most popular model, with 5,028 units sold. The 'Moskvich 3e' followed with 1,796 units, while the Zeekr X rounded out the top three with 1,407 sales.

2024 was pivotal for domestic electric vehicle production, with local brands like Moskvich and Evolute solidifying their market presence. While Evolute saw a 39% drop in sales, Moskvich increased its sales volume by 3.1 times, demonstrating local manufacturers' competitiveness against foreign brands.

In January 2025, the Russian government approved a strategic plan to boost electric vehicle production, aiming to increase output sevenfold to 54,200 units annually by 2030. This includes enhancing charging infrastructure and localizing key component production.

Currently, electric vehicles represent about 1% of total vehicle production in Russia, but this share is expected to grow significantly by 2030, aided by the development of a unified platform to reduce production costs and enhance accessibility.

Overall, 2024 was a significant year for the Russian electric vehicle market, with record sales and ambitious development plans underscoring the sector's vital role in the country's future.
