Microsoft's 2025 Work Trend Index: AI 'Agent Bosses' and the Rise of the Frontier Firm

Edited by: Veronika Nazarova

Microsoft's 2025 Work Trend Index, based on a survey of 31,000 workers across 31 countries, envisions a future where AI agents are integral to the workplace, leading to the rise of what they call the 'Frontier Firm'. This new organizational model is characterized by hybrid teams of humans and AI agents working together.

The report suggests a three-phase evolution: AI initially acts as an assistant, then as a 'digital colleague' handling specific tasks, and finally as a team of agents managing entire business processes under human direction. Microsoft predicts that organizations will transition towards becoming a Frontier Firm within the next 2-5 years.

A key aspect of this transformation is the emergence of 'Agent Bosses' – human employees who manage and oversee AI agents. According to the report, leaders are more likely to embrace this shift, with many considering hiring AI workforce managers and AI agent specialists within the next 12-18 months. This reflects a broader trend where companies are looking to AI to expand workforce capabilities and automate complex tasks.
