Deezer: 18% of Songs Now Ai-Generated, Prompting Copyright Concerns

Paris, France - Approximately 18% of songs uploaded to the French streaming platform Deezer are now fully generated by artificial intelligence (AI).

Deezer reports over 20,000 AI-generated tracks are added daily, nearly double the amount from four months prior. Aurelien Herault, Deezer's Chief Innovation Officer, stated that AI-generated content continues to flood streaming platforms like Deezer.

The company launched an AI detection tool in January to filter these songs from recommendations, prioritizing human artists for its 9.7 million subscribers. Concerns about copyright, creativity, and fair compensation for artists are rising with the expansion of generative AI.

Deezer's detection system identifies music from AI startups like Suno and Udio, which are facing copyright lawsuits from major labels. Numerous artists have voiced concerns that AI music undermines creativity and marginalizes human artists.

The role of AI is also debated in the film industry, with AI use in Oscar-nominated films and a Hollywood strike in 2023 seeking protection against AI. As AI produces content cheaply and quickly, questions arise about the cost and impact on artists.
