EU Aims for AI Leadership with New Gigafactory Plan

Edited by: Veronika Nazarova

The EU Commission has unveiled an action plan to establish Europe as a global leader in artificial intelligence. A key component is the creation of AI Gigafactories, large-scale facilities equipped with approximately 100,000 AI chips, significantly more than current AI factories. These Gigafactories will drive the development of advanced AI models and maintain the EU's strategic autonomy in critical sectors. The initiative includes the InvestAI program, mobilizing €20 billion in investments for up to five Gigafactories across the EU. Henna Virkkunen, the European Commission's Vice-President for Technology Sovereignty, emphasized the plan's focus on making Europe more competitive and technologically sovereign.
