Google Open-Sources SpeciesNet AI for Wildlife Identification

Edited by: Veronika Nazarova

Google has released SpeciesNet, an open-source AI model, designed to identify animal species from camera trap photos. This tool, trained on over 65 million images, can classify images into over 2,000 labels, including animal species and non-animal objects.

SpeciesNet aims to accelerate wildlife research by automating the analysis of camera trap data, which is often a time-consuming process.

Available on GitHub under an Apache 2.0 license, SpeciesNet is intended for use by tool developers, academics, and biodiversity-related startups to enhance biodiversity monitoring in natural areas.
