Apple Halts AI News Summarization Tool Over Errors

Apple has paused its AI tool designed to summarize news headlines following numerous complaints from news organizations regarding inaccuracies.

The tech company announced on Thursday that it disabled the feature for news and entertainment categories in a beta software update, which will eventually be available to all users. Apple stated it is working on improvements before reintroducing the tool.

This feature is part of Apple’s broader initiative into generative AI technology, launched last year. The aim was to consolidate notifications from various apps into concise alerts, saving users time.

However, several news organizations raised concerns after the tool generated false headlines. For instance, the BBC reported an erroneous summary that misrepresented a news event involving a murder suspect.

In response to the complaints, Apple added a warning in the Settings app indicating that the summarization feature is still in beta and may contain errors.
