Google has announced Android XR, its latest software platform developed in collaboration with Samsung, aimed at smart glasses and mixed-reality headsets. This marks Google's return to the mixed-reality space after previous setbacks with Google Glass and other VR projects.

Sameer Samat, president of the Google ecosystem, emphasized the significance of this launch, stating, "the time is right for XR" as part of the new "Gemini era." Android XR is designed to support a variety of wearable devices and will utilize the Gemini AI to enhance user interaction through voice commands and contextual understanding.

Samsung's Project Moohan, an XR headset, was revealed alongside Android XR, promising advanced display technology and natural input methods. Set to launch in 2025, it will feature the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chipset, supporting high-resolution displays and improved processing capabilities.

Android XR aims to provide access to a wide range of applications, including Google services like YouTube and Google Maps, while also being compatible with WebXR and OpenXR standards. This compatibility will allow for seamless integration with existing XR apps, particularly those from Meta's ecosystem.

While Google focuses on software, it has confirmed partnerships with manufacturers like Sony, Xreal, and Lynx to develop Android XR hardware. The competition with Meta's Horizon OS, which has established a strong presence in the XR market, is expected to drive innovation and enhance user experiences in the mixed-reality space.
