UN Highlights AI's Role in Global Challenges at Upcoming Congress

Melissa Fleming, UN Under-Secretary-General for Global Communications, will travel to Mexico in December for the International Editors Congress and the International Book Fair. Ahead of her visit, she emphasized the importance of transparency and the role of journalists in holding governments accountable, especially in the context of artificial intelligence (AI) and democracy.

Fleming noted that the recent Pacts for the Future and Digital address global challenges, including disinformation and AI governance. She expressed concern over the misuse of AI in elections and the rise of deepfakes, which pose significant risks to democratic processes.

During her visit, she plans to discuss the integrity of information and the impact of AI on journalism and democratic accountability, highlighting the need for robust protections for journalists worldwide.

The UN aims to establish a global governance framework for AI to ensure its benefits are shared equitably and to combat the challenges posed by misinformation, particularly in the digital age.
