The Velvet Sundown: The Rise and Fall of an AI-Generated Band

The psych-rock band The Velvet Sundown debuted on Spotify in June 2025, quickly attracting over 400,000 monthly listeners.

They released two albums, "Floating On Echoes" and "Dust and Silence," with a third planned.

Doubts about the band's genuineness surfaced due to the lack of verifiable information about its members and online activity.

Further investigation revealed that some of The Velvet Sundown's tracks were flagged as potentially AI-generated by Deezer.

A spokesperson, Andrew Frelon, confirmed the project was an "art hoax" created using the generative AI platform Suno. The project's goal was to explore the impact of artificial creations in the music industry.

The Velvet Sundown's story underscores the increasing presence of AI-generated content in music. It raises questions about authenticity, copyright, and the future of music creation.

As AI technology evolves, the line between human and machine-made art becomes increasingly blurred.
