A lawsuit alleging copyright infringement against Mariah Carey's iconic holiday song, "All I Want for Christmas Is You," has been dismissed. U.S. District Judge Monica Almadani ruled in favor of Carey, stating that insufficient evidence was presented to prove that the 1994 hit infringed upon a 1989 country song of the same name.
The plaintiffs, Andy Stone (Vince Vance) and Troy Powers, sought $20 million, claiming Carey's song required licensing and songwriting credit. However, a musicologist's analysis indicated that the songs lacked significant similarities, citing the use of common Christmas clichés predating both compositions.
The dismissal provides relief for Carey, whose holiday season is synonymous with her music. Her album, Merry Christmas, marked its 30th anniversary in December and has sold 18 million copies, solidifying its status as one of the best-selling holiday albums of all time. The album features covers of classic Christmas songs and the original hit "All I Want for Christmas Is You," which consistently re-enters music charts annually.
