Music as a Reflection of Emotion: From Heartbreak to Transformation

Edited by: Aurelia One

Music has always been a mirror of human emotions, and in Nigeria, listeners find solace in it as they navigate their experiences. On Valentine’s Day, Spotify in Nigeria sees a significant surge in streams of heartbreak songs, highlighting music’s role as a medium for awareness, acceptance, and healing.

From 2022 to 2024, the streaming of such tracks increased by 626%, with men more likely than women to choose these songs. Some of the most popular tracks include "One Love" by Wizkid, "Cast" by Shallipopi and Odumodublvck, and "Egwu" by Chike and Mohbad. Interestingly, the highest streaming numbers occur in the morning hours between 9 and 11 AM, when a new day begins, and music helps reflect on the past while moving forward.

But what if we don’t see these numbers as a sign of suffering, but rather as a path to a deeper understanding of Love?

When a person experiences pain, it is not merely a rupture—it is an opportunity to feel more deeply, to reflect, to break free from illusions, and to come to a true understanding of Unity. The music that listeners choose becomes a companion on this journey, helping them find harmony between what was and what lies ahead.

Each melody, each lyric serves as a reminder that Love is always present—it never leaves but transforms, becoming the light that guides us back to our true selves.

The Transformative Power of Music at the 2025 Grammy Awards

While some find comfort in songs about lost love, others create music that symbolizes change and new horizons.

Beyoncé made history at the 2025 Grammy Awards, becoming the first Black artist of the 21st century to win Album of the Year for Cowboy Carter. This album was more than just music—it was a fusion of voices, cultures, and eras, reminding us that we are all connected.

Sabrina Carpenter won Best Pop Album for Short n’ Sweet, while Chappell Roan was named Best New Artist, highlighting how new voices continue to carve out space in the industry, bringing their stories and unique energy.W

Breaking Musical Boundaries

Musical boundaries continue to dissolve as genres blend and evolve.

  • Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars won Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for their collaboration "Die With a Smile".

  • Alicia Keys was honored with the Global Impact Award, reinforcing that music is a universal language—one that transcends borders, cultures, and personal experiences.

The rap scene also showcased its strength. Doechii became the third woman to win Best Rap Album, with Alligator Bites Never Heal, an album that serves as a voice of strength and raw honesty, proving that even deep wounds can become sources of wisdom and growth.

Music as a Path to Unity

In every song—whether it carries the melancholy of heartbreak or the triumph of the grand stage—there is a common thread: the desire to connect with something greater than ourselves.

People don’t just listen to music—they seek their stories within it, a key to healing, an inspiration for new beginnings.

Ultimately, everything we feel leads us to the same realization: Love has always been and will always remain within us
