LONDON - David Beckham, the celebrated British soccer star, has been knighted by King Charles III. Buckingham Palace announced the prestigious honor on Friday, recognizing Beckham's significant contributions to both sport and charity.

This knighthood, the highest honor within Britain's system, acknowledges Beckham's remarkable achievements and his impact on British culture. Many have long anticipated this recognition, given his celebrated career.

The honor is part of the King's birthday honors list, which celebrates prominent figures across British society. Beckham's wife, Victoria, formerly of the Spice Girls, will now be known as Lady Beckham. Their marriage in 1999 solidified their status as a leading celebrity couple.

Beckham's journey began in East London, leading to global sporting fame. He played for Manchester United and other elite European teams. He represented England in over 100 matches, often as captain, and participated in three World Cups.

He was a key member of the "Class of 92," a group of talented young players who shaped Manchester United's success. Beckham's career includes 19 major trophies, and he was the first English player to win major titles in four different countries.

Known for his intelligence and skill, Beckham excelled with long passes and free kicks. He later played for the LA Galaxy in the United States, boosting soccer's popularity there.

Beyond his playing career, Beckham has been a UNICEF ambassador since 2005, and a fund was established in his name a decade later. His post-playing career was influenced by media entrepreneur Simon Fuller, leading to his ownership of the Inter Miami MLS franchise.

Beckham has remained a prominent figure, from his public appearance at Queen Elizabeth's coffin viewing to a recent Emmy-winning Netflix docuseries. In 2017, leaked emails raised questions, but the Beckhams' spokesperson dismissed them as hacked and altered.

The knighthood, though awarded by the King, is decided by committees. The process is managed by 10 Downing Street, the Prime Minister's office, where Keir Starmer received his knighthood in 2014.
