The U.S. plans to remove synthetic food dyes from its food supply. This initiative is led by Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and FDA Commissioner Marty Makary.
The FDA will revoke authorizations for some dyes and collaborate with the industry for voluntary removal of others. Concerns have been raised about potential links between these dyes and health conditions like ADHD, obesity, and diabetes.
The FDA plans to authorize four new natural color additives and accelerate the review of others. Food makers are encouraged to use ingredients like watermelon, beet, and carrot juice for coloring.
The agency will partner with the National Institutes of Health to research the impact of food additives on children's health. Some food companies are already reformulating products to exclude artificial dyes.
