People often ask how we developed our chemistry, and I honestly don't remember doing so. It just happened immediately and effortlessly, Aisha Dee explained.
Katie Stevens added that she felt so comfortable with her co-stars that she was already acting like close friends within the first few minutes of meeting.

The show's creators were looking for performers for the roles of three friends: Jane, Kat, and Sutton. The primary challenge was not finding three professional actresses, but rather portraying a rare type of organic female friendship on screen without toxic competition. Traditional auditions were unable to provide this.
Casting directors chose to look for personal backgrounds that intersected with the characters' personalities. Katie Stevens came from the music competition American Idol, Aisha Dee sang in her own band, and Meghann Fahy had significant Broadway experience. Their real-life experience surviving New York's demanding creative industry became the foundation for their on-screen personas. Producers did not force the actresses to play unfamiliar archetypes, but instead integrated their personal skills, including their vocals, into the script.
The second element of the strategy was the chemistry read, which was conducted immediately before the pilot was filmed. The actresses were intentionally left together off-set without strict supervision. The resulting instant synergy—where isolation and shared stress turned strangers into genuine friends in a single evening—determined the success of the casting.
