Kleber Mendonça Filho's 'O Agente Secreto' (The Secret Agent) has premiered at the Cannes Film Festival 2025, bringing a vibrant Brazilian flavor to the event. The film is competing for the prestigious Palme d'Or at the 78th edition of the festival, which is taking place from May 13 to 24, 2025.
The film, set during Brazil's military dictatorship in 1977, follows Marcelo (Wagner Moura), an undercover agent who flees to Recife seeking refuge, only to find himself under surveillance amidst Carnival celebrations. Filho explains the film explores individual behavior within an oppressive system.
Brazil is the Country of Honour at the Marché du Film 2025, with a spotlight on its film industry. The festival includes 22 films competing for the Palme d'Or, with Juliette Binoche serving as the jury president.
